NWDS Passed Core Web Vitals Assessment

I was engaged by Northwest Driving School to conduct a technical SEO audit and improve its core web performance. The primary objective was to resolve critical performance issues to enhance both its organic rankings and user experience.

The Technical Challenge

The site was failing its Core Web Vitals assessment due to slow loading times and a poor user experience. Specifically, the Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) was high, Interaction to Next Paint (INP) was slow, and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) was poor. These technical deficiencies negatively impacted the site’s ranking potential and crawl budget.

The goal was clear: achieve a “Passed” Core Web Vitals assessment and a better Lighthouse Performance score by tackling these core issues.

My E-E-A-T-Optimized Strategy

To establish my expertise and trustworthiness, my strategy focused on a meticulous, data-driven approach. I developed and executed a multi-point plan targeting each key performance indicator.

  • LCP & Page Speed Optimization:

    • I began by optimizing all critical images, converting them to modern formats like WebP where possible and compressing them to a fraction of their original size without visual quality loss.

    • I then implemented lazy loading for all images outside the initial viewport, ensuring only essential content was loaded immediately.

    • To address server-side latency, I worked with the hosting provider to improve Time to First Byte (TTFB), resulting in a faster response from the server.

  • INP & Interactivity Improvements:

    • I performed a deep audit of the JavaScript on the page. I identified and minified render-blocking scripts, and deferred the loading of non-critical JavaScript to prevent it from delaying the main thread.

    • I also implemented a more efficient event listener strategy to improve the speed of user interactions.

  • CLS & Visual Stability:

    • To eliminate all layout shifts, I manually added width and height attributes to all image tags.

    • I also preloaded critical web fonts and reserved space for dynamic elements to ensure the layout was stable from the moment the page began to render.

The Results

My work yielded a transformative change in the site’s technical performance, as validated by Google’s public Core Web Vitals report. This not only improved user experience but also signaled to search engines that the site is a reliable, high-quality resource.

Core Web Vitals Assessment:

  • Core Web Vitals Assessment: Passed

  • Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): 1.7s (a passing score well below the 2.5s threshold).

  • Interaction to Next Paint (INP): 139ms (significantly faster, well within the recommended 200ms).

  • Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): 0.0 (a perfect score for visual stability).

Overall Lighthouse Audit Scores:

The optimizations led to a holistic improvement across all audit categories:

  • Performance: 91

  • Accessibility: 89

  • Best Practices: 100

  • SEO: 100

By improving these foundational metrics, I helped Northwest Driving School achieve a stronger digital footprint. This case study demonstrates how a focus on technical SEO fundamentals can directly enhance a website’s authority and trustworthiness, leading to improved organic visibility and a better experience for all visitors.
